An 18-year-old accidentally shot and killed his sister while trying to show off his new gun.
The teen had been showing the weapon to his 19-year-old sister Laura Natalya Rodriguez when the gun suddenly went off and hit her in the neck.
The Houston Police Department rushed to the scene at around 1 pm after receiving reports of a dead woman.
According to ABC13, Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another sibling contacted 911 and attempted to administer CPR, police said.
“It’s a tragic situation for the entire family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them,” said HPD Sgt. Matthew Brady.
Houston police are still investigating the incident. In a statement on Twitter, the department said: “Our homicide detectives are on scene of a deceased woman in a residence in the 100 block of Wellington St. in north Houston.
“Officers were called about 1 pm. Prelim info is the female was shot as other family members were inside the home.”
The grieving family has launched a GoFundMe page for funeral expenses and it has raised more than $16,700 of its $10,000 goal.
“Laura “Natalya”, known to family, has moved on to be with our maker,” the page reads.
“It seems that the best ones are needed in heaven. Age 19, Senior at Syracuse University, lived abroad in Madrid for her first semester, traveled around Italy, embraced the world with open arms. Her favorite place to be was Disney World.”
The GoFundMe page adds: “Loved to laugh and have fun. No one is ever prepared, so close to Christmas, we are asking for your help for funeral arrangements and services.
“All help is greatly appreciated. God bless you.”
