Texas Senator Ted Cruz started his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday in Orlando, Florida with a joke about his Cancun trip.
However, social media users were clearly not impressed.
“God bless CPAC,” Cruz said to the cheering crowd. “I gotta say, Orlando is awesome. It’s not as nice as Cancun, but it’s nice,” he joked.
Cruz’s joke received a mixed reaction, with many gasped in surprise while others laughed at his witty pun.
But Twitter users did not see the funny side of the joke, with one writing: “Cruz must be voted out of office and replaced with someone who is not a self centered narcissist and has empathy for his constituents.”
Another tweeted: “Ted Cruz is the biggest fool in the Congress.”
Someone else said: “Here is @tedcruz out of state again – not doing his job again – joking about leaving Texans behind.”
Cruz was slammed by both sides of the political aisle for flying to Cancun while millions of Texas were struggling without electricity, food, and water.
“This has been an infuriating week for Texans. Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too,” he said at that time.
“With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon.”
The Senator claimed that his daughters asked him the day before if they could go on a vacation, and he and his wife agreed. Hours later, they were already on the plane.
He was immediately criticized for the trip and for seeming to blame the decision on his daughters.
Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez raised over $5 million in relief for Texas.
