Texas Senator Ted Cruz has been criticized for posting pictures of himself delivering bottled water to Texans only days after he flew to Cancun with his wife and children.
Cruz, 50, took to Twitter to share photos of himself handing out water to residents. Photos show him putting the packs of bottled water in the trunk and back seat of people’s vehicles.
This comes as the Senator faces criticism for flying to Mexico as millions of Texas struggle amid a brutal snowstorm, which claimed at least 30 lives.
Cruz was then forced to return from the beach resort the following day and tried to justify leaving the state.
“This has been an infuriating week for Texans. Like millions of Texans, our family lost heat and power too,” Cruz said. “With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon.”
The Senator also claimed that his daughters asked him the day before if they could go on a vacation, and he and his wife agreed. Hours later, they were already on the plane.
Cruz was immediately criticized for the trip and for seeming to blame the decision on his daughters.
Before the Senator released his statement, sources told The New York Times and FOX that the vacation was pre-planned. He was also seen carrying a massive carry-on which suggested that he planned to stay for a few nights.
However, Saturday’s photos did not impress his Twitter followers.
One person commented: “Too little too late, Ted Cruz/ My sister, her 2 sons, & their wives are all Republicans living near Austin. You’ve lost all their votes. My step-son & his wife figured you out years ago; you never had their votes. Pretending to care after you’ve been caught does not count.”
Another wrote: “The same reason why a US Senator would feel the need to have a police escort when he returns to his home State is the reason why he needs to set up a photo op in an empty parking lot – he knows his own constituents hate him and wouldn’t hesitate to call him out to his face.”
A third said: “GTFOH. This guy Ted Cruz is an embarrassment to Texas and anyone with a brain. He must really think his constituents are dumb as hell.”
Someone else added: “First you abandon your constituents, now they are crisis photo opps to you? Do you have any shame at all Ted Cruz?”
