A science teacher became famous overnight after winning the most prestigious award for teachers.
Peter Tabichi, a monk from Kenya, competed with 10,000 other teachers from 179 countries.
Peter is now taking the $1 million back home after he won The Global Teacher Prize.
He teaches science in a small village in Kenya where more than 90 percent of the people live in poverty. Classrooms are overcrowded and it can be as full as 80 students in each class. Some students have to walk for up to 6 kilometers (4 miles) to attend classes.
The science teacher has been giving 80 percent of his earnings to support students who couldn’t pay for uniforms and books and couldn’t continue their studies. Peter has already mentioned that he plans to give most of the award money to support those in need.
“The school is in a very remote area — most of the students come from very poor families, even affording breakfast is hard,” he said in his speech after winning the Global Teacher Prize.
Peter is also keen to give all he has got to raise interest in science and in education. His students have been successful in international science competitions, including the one from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom. Many of his students have also been accepted to large universities.
The teachers and students in his school deal with the lack of essential resources like textbooks and books. However, those who want to achieve something always find a way. Because the school couldn’t provide internet, Peter goes to an internet café to download resources for his class.
