A 27-year-old female teacher was imprisoned for raping two male students, aged 16 and 17.
Kathryn Houghtaling was teaching at Rochester High School in Michigan when she raped two students. According to The Detroit News, she also gave Xanax to one of the underage teen boys.
The special education teacher pleaded no contest to multiple charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with the students and another charge of providing a controlled substance to a victim.
News reported that Houghtaling tearfully said in Oakland County Circuit Court: “I’ve learned to take full responsibility for my actions and seek help for those that I can’t control.
“The concept of going to prison is a scary one …”
Houghtaling said that she regretted what had happened and that her actions hurt her marriage and destroyed her carrier.
The 27-year-old teacher was sentenced to between 4 years and 15 years in jail.
Judge Rae Lee Chabot said after the sentencing that nothing could’ve prevented her to sentence the special education teacher to less time in jail.
Chabot said: “It’s difficult for me to judge someone else’s behavior in this way but the law is very clear — and it applies to men and women the same.”
Houghtaling’s actions were discovered after a “parent found a video of her partying with students,” the Metro reported.
Then it was discovered that the teacher had sexually abused her victims in his own home. She “groomed her victims by drinking and smoking marijuana after school, and also plied one of the boys with Xanax,” the news outlet reported.
One of the victims’ uncle said during a victim impact statement: “She gave him drugs. To me, this is ridiculous – it’s absurd to do that.”
The mother of the other victim called for ‘maximum punishment’ and accused the former teacher of sneaking into her house.
“I understand that my actions have consequences that will affect me, my husband, my family and friends,” Houghtaling said, according to C & G Newspapers reports.
She added: “Having that burden on me has been a punishment I could have never imagine and never want to experience again.”
