Taylor Swift has decided to go political.
She publicly stated that she regrets her non-involvement in the last election in 2016. On Monday night at the VMA awards, she slammed the Trump administration for ignoring the Equality Act petition.
She also said that the petition has five times the number it requires to warrant the White House response.
Taylor Swift bagged the best video of the year award for her song You Need To Calm Down. Accepting the award, she said that she first wants to thank her fans, as the video consists of several issues.
She further added that voting for the video means that her fans want a world where everyone is treated equally under the law disregarding how one identifies and who one loves.
She thanked everyone who signed the petition and noted that it has more than half a million signatures, which is 5 times the amount needed to warrant the White House response. She then purposely looked at her watch.
You Need To Calm Down video also won the award for Video for Good category as it has raised awareness.
Speaking about President Trump’s administration, she mentioned that the U.S. is a democracy where Americans are allowed to dissent, disagree, debate, but she thinks that according to Trump, it is an autocracy.
In the VMAs, an awkward moment took place where John Travolta mistakenly almost presented the Video of the Year award to drag queen Jade Jolie instead of Swift. But he realized in time and gave the award to the actual winner.
In her You Need To Calm Down video, seven drag queens try to impersonate famous artists like Beyonce and Cardi B while they wait to be crowned by RuPaul. Interestingly, it was Jolie who played Taylor’s drag queen version.
