Morticians Michael and Kyle Sherwood offer a unique service for those who are grieving.
They can remove deceased loved one’s tattoos and place them into a frame.
The father and son run Save My Ink Forever, a service that lets people preserve tats after death.
“One of my dad’s friends told him he would like his tattoo preserved,” Kyle said to 9 News. “Being the guys our friends come to with death-related questions, we kind of laughed about it at first.”
But the unique idea stayed in their minds and they started to think if it could be done, with Kyle asking: “Why not keep their tattoos as a memorial?”
So the duo set up Save My Ink Forever and people are able to save the skin and tattoos of their deceased loved one in a frame.
Explaining the process to 9 News, Kyle said the tattoo has to be removed within 72 hours of the person dying. He said it can be done before or after embalming as it does not interfere with cremation or traditional viewing.
They said they treated the body with the utmost respect and dignity. After finished, the pieces do not require any maintenance.
But not everyone who heard about the idea is on-board. Kyle said they do not worry too much about others who think it is strange as it is the families’ wishes that are important for them.
Some families wanted to turn the tattooed skin of their loved ones into book covers and lampshades. But they refused and only offered to make a nice wall hanging.
“We are helping families and fulfilling their last wishes. We are not trying to create a freakshow,” Kyle added.
