Due to the raging coronavirus pandemic, Target has joined Walmart in closing their stores on Thanksgiving Day following days after the latter announced they want people “to enjoy the day at home with your loved ones.
”
Both giants decided to close their locations on Thanksgiving Day and therefore put an end to a decade-long tradition of kicking off Black Friday sales on the holiday.
In a Target statement, the company suggested their reason behind closing its stores on the holiday is that “this isn’t a year for crowds” due to the pandemic.
“Historically, deal hunting and holiday shopping can mean crowded events, and this isn’t a year for crowds,” the statement read.
Speaking of the decision was also CEO Brian Cornell who said:
“This year more than ever, a joyful holiday will be inseparable from a safe one, and we’re continuing to adjust our plans to deliver ease, value and the joy of the season in a way that only Target can.”
The decision was announced by Target on Monday, whereas Walmart last Tuesday inspired other retailers to follow their step by announcing they would not be open on 2020 Thanksgiving and suggesting people should spend more time with their loved ones rather than shopping.
“Our best ideas come from our associates, and this year we have decided to close our stores on Thanksgiving Day – November 26. We know it’s been a trying year, and you’ve stepped up. We want you to enjoy the day at home with your loved ones,” Walmart CEO John Furner said.
While the company stores will operate as usual on November 25, Walmart hasn’t announced their plans for Black Friday, November 27, as of this writing.
Previously, Walmart would often offer Black Friday discounts on Thanksgiving Day evening, attracting hordes of shoppers to their stores. Now, for the first time in a decade, both Target and Walmart will remain closed on the holiday.
