We’ve seen some smart dogs in the past, but nothing compares to this dog.

The dog is a native of Italy with a very American name- Deril.point 50 | Lusy Imbergerova is Deril’s human companion, and she has been training Deril for dance duos alongside Lusy, who spent months perfecting the routine they would be performing at the Dog Dance World Championship held by Federation Cynologique Internationale.point 276 |

Though Deril seemed ferocious and a bit untamed when he got onto the stage with his ragged, rough fur, large menacing teeth, and wild menacing look.point 123 | He seemed like the last dog you would ever expect to be into something as delicate and sophisticated as dancing.point 216 | 1

However, as soon as the action began, it was abundantly clear to the whole audience, that this dog knew what he was doing and was master of performance in his rite.

The FCI that founded the Dog Dance Championship and hosts it every year describes the competition as a platform for dogs and humans to collaborate on dance and performance art to demonstrate the skills of the dog.

The routines performed vary greatly, from slow classical oriented musical performances to urban styled robot dance and even military exercises turned into a visual performance. The competition also looks to score on how effortlessly the dogs put instructions into action and follow the lead of their human owners.

The Federation encourages participants to push their creative boundaries and brings as much innovation to the dance floor as possible, and it is due to this reason that the guidelines and formats for routines are extremely lax.

Although the talent and skills of all the dogs competing are obviously far above average, otherwise how could they make it to the selected participant’s list. Deril seems to be in a league of his own even in this very international cream of trained show dogs.

Deril, the dancing dog, begins with some of the classic old-school maneuvers such as going in between Lucy’s legs and showcasing his clear understanding and swift abiding of his owner’s instructions. Soon enough, we begin to see Deril bring the house down with his amazing military routines that have been drilled to excellence and precision. He performs CPR in mime on Lusy, proceeds to successfully attempt serious sit-ups almost as if he were an army recruit.

However, our favorite feature of the whole act was the truly impressive routine of a series of advanced and difficult to master athletic jumps. Though all parts of the performance won the hearts of judges and the audience from the very start, it was the jumps that we feel were the true jaw-dropping moment of awe for all those watching the spectacle.

The unusually loud and excited wave of applause and cheering that the canine-human dancing duo receives at the end of their performance says one thing for sure that the audience and judges were unanimously impressed and had not seen a performance like this before.point 333 |

Lusy and Deril had not exited the stage even when the sounds of admiration and respect began to fill the venue with energy.point 101 | Even the judges, who are rarely known to be of a mirthful spirit or express their approval and respect in an uninhibited manner.point 207 | 1
