After Mr. Newbie fell to his death while the pair was soaring across the buildings, his mate spent several years laying unfertilized eggs around her nesting grounds.

Unable to find love again, Newbie was moved to a sanctuary after another pair of swans took over the pond where she used to swim together with her partner.

Despite all odds, the heartbroken swan was able to find love again after starting her life at the sanctuary where she met Wallace. After their romance kicked off, the pair was allowed to start living together in the Highgate pond where they also welcomed seven cygnets.

Since swans typically mate for life and refuse to have multiple mates throughout their lives, it is astounding that Newbie managed to find love again after turning down suitors for four years following her mate’s death.

“She was definitely heartbroken,” Louisa Green, a swan rescue volunteer, said of Newbie’s story. “Clearly something about him just charmed her. And this all happened on the day before the UK went into national lockdown.”

Following the beautiful love story, Green and Dee McLean, an illustrator, decided to come up with ‘There’s Something About Wallace’, a children’s book inspired by Newbie and Wallace.

“The book follows the highs and lows of the past six months, including the arrival of several delightful cygnets and the tragic dog attack that saw Mrs Newbie taken back to the swan sanctuary for treatment, leaving Wallace to raise their cygnets alone,” Green told Camden New Journal.

“It is such an enchanting story, and we felt it was perfect to share it this way.”
