The twin girls were only three days old at the time of the surgery and weighed just 7 pounds combinedly. They were joined at the abdominal area.

The doctors convinced the parents of the conjoined twins that the surgery is the only best option. However, the parents were afraid that the surgery might cause severe complications.

After the five-hour surgery was a success, the two girls (unnamed) are expected to go home later this week.

The doctors at SS Hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, performed the surgery free of cost, as the parents weren’t in the condition to afford such medical procedure.

Assistant professor of pediatric surgery Dr. Vaibhav Pandey said that it was one of the rarest surgeries their hospital performs. He said that he was extremely happy that the surgery was a success and both the girls survived in spite the children being weak and the lengthy procedures.

It was a challenging task for the doctors. The operation took place earlier this month on December 6. The surgery was performed by a team of ten doctors, five surgeons, and 15 nurses.

To celebrate the success of the surgery, they captured a selfie with the two girls who were still on the operating table.

The girls are recovering quickly after the surgery. Their families and relatives are eagerly waiting for them as they are in the preparations of the traditional rituals during which the girls will be named.

According to medical literature, when a woman produces just one egg that fails to separate after being fertilized completely, it causes the development of conjoined twins.

The embryo parts into identical twins during the first few weeks but fails to complete the process. Hence, they grow conjoined in the mother’s womb.

The births of conjoined twins are extremely rare. Their internal organs and skin are fused together. This happens only once in every 200,000 births.
