Motown has been mourning the loss of The Supremes co-founder Mary Wilson after the singer passed away suddenly at the age of 76.
The passing of the legendary trailblazer, who signed with Motown back in 1961, was confirmed by the singer’s longtime publicist Jay Schwartz.
According to the reports, the diva, who long performed alongside The Supremes bandmates Florence Ballard and Diana Ross, died suddenly, whereas the cause of her death is yet to be confirmed as of this writing.
In a tribute to the legendary performer, Motown founder Berry Gordy dubbed Wilson a “trailblazer and a diva” who will be “deeply” missed.
“I was extremely shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of a major member of the Motown family, Mary Wilson of the Supremes,” he expressed.
“The Supremes were always known as the ‘sweethearts of Motown.’ Mary, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, came to Motown in the early 1960s.
“After an unprecedented string of No. 1 hits, television and nightclub bookings, they opened doors for themselves, the other Motown acts, and many, many others.
“I was always proud of Mary. She was quite a star in her own right and over the years continued to work hard to boost the legacy of the Supremes. Mary Wilson was extremely special to me. She was a trailblazer, a diva and will be deeply missed.”
Paying her respects to the talented singer who helped shape the entertainment industry was also Diana Ross who recalled the “wonderful memories” she and her bandmates created together during their prime years.
“I just woke up to this news, my condolences to you Mary’s family, I am reminded that each day is a gift, I have so many wonderful memories of our time together ‘The Supremes’ will live on, in our hearts,” she expressed.
As the deceased performer’s publicist explained after the unfortunate turn of events, Wilson will be laid to rest in a private ceremony, whereas her funeral service will be arranged in accordance with the coronavirus safety guidelines.point 593 | 1
