The popular attraction recently launched a campaign as government Covid-19 guidelines keeping zoos closed mean it could be shut ‘indefinitely.’

While the campaign has gained more than £2 million, supermarket juggernauts Iceland have pledged to adopt all of the Humboldt penguins to support the zoo.

Adopting animals is a great way to provide funds to an animal enclosure or a zoo, which is what Chester Zoo and other attractions desperately need to continue.

In an interview with Cheshire Live, Richard Walker, the managing director of Iceland, said: “We were all saddened to hear of Chester Zoo’s recent struggles; it’s the heart of the local community in Chester and a much loved family favourite – I remember visiting the zoo as a child and my own kids love going there.

“We’re proud to be able to lend them our support both through the adoption of the Humboldt penguins on behalf of our colleagues, and by lobbying in support of zoos being allowed to reopen soon.

“The conservation work undertaken by the Zoo is vital and along with the park itself reopening it is incredibly important that this amazing work is able to continue.”

Chester Zoo’s Humboldt penguins recently welcomed a creche of adorable chicks, which were named after NHS hospitals to thank them for their hard work amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Other zoos are also experiencing a growing threat due to the pandemic, with Twycross Zoo has made cries for assistance and London Zoo needing funds to stay afloat.
