Selkirk Rex cats are one of the few cat breeds that have curly hair. Combined with the breed’s soft character, the combination with the beautiful fur makes them irresistible among cat lovers.

Some genetic mutations have produced other variants of Rex cats such as the German Rex, Devon Rex, Cornish Rex and a new breed called LaPerm. They are all termed “Rex” after the term used for breeding domestic rabbits that have similar fur that is called Rex rabbits.

A few critics don’t look kindly on Rex cat breeding because they say the whiskers become wavy and shorter. They say that this will reduce the functionality of the cat’s whiskers and may affect their ability to survive outside.

Whether or not you agree with the way they are bred, there’s no doubt that their curly fur makes for a very striking feature. This breed grows to a maximum of 7 kilos with a medium to large build. They also have a strong bone structure.

Apart from their adorable physical characteristics, Selkirk Rex cats are kind and cuddly, provided they come from a serious kennel. They love the company of humans and always want to be caressed. The attention they shower their owner is akin to that of a dog.

They are also social creatures that can get along well with other cats. As with most pets, if they start off with their owners as kittens, they can easily adapt to the owner’s daily routine and will not fearful of vacuum cleaners or riding cars.

One advantage of the breed is that it’s not difficult to care for their soft coat, whether the short-haired or long-haired ones. Just brush your cat once a week although during molting you may need to comb your cat more often.

If you get your cat used to this grooming routine, they will enjoy it and even demand it of you. So be prepared to pamper them!
