A 16-year-old McDonald’s worker was shot through a drive-thru window by a complete stranger.
Kylee Leniz, a high school student, was rushed to Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital after a man walked up to the drive-thru where she was working and shot her dead at around 9:30 pm on Sunday.
24-year-old Justin Michael Mullis has been arrested for shooting and killing the teen.
The crime appeared to be random as there was no connection between the victim and the gunman, police said.
An acquaintance drove Mullis to the police station on Monday afternoon after a photo of him was posted by the department.
The shooter is being charged with one count of Open Murder, which includes first-degree, second-degree murder, and involuntary and voluntary manslaughter.
Chris Kassity of the McDonalds in Elko, Nevada said the company’s thoughts were with girl’s family, The Sun reported.
“’It is with a heavy heart that we lost one of our Elko employees and are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred last night,” Kassity said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the employee during this deeply difficult time.
“We are fully cooperating with local law enforcement as they continue to investigate this tragedy.”
People brought balloons, stuffed animals, and flowers to the branch at the corner of Boyd Drive and Idaho Street.
Kylee’s friends also took to social media to pay tribute, with one writing: “Kylee Ruth Leniz this is not a goodbye it’s until we meet again! I just wanted to say that I’m very thankful to have a person like you in my life.
“Kylee I’m sorry this happened to you, you will get your justice beautiful. Imma miss you a lot love thanks for everything. I know you will be watching over everyone that you love. I love you Rest Easy Love.”
