16-year-old Aaron Trejo, a member of the Mishawaka High School football team, confessed to fatally stabbing his pregnant schoolmate after she waited for some time to tell him about her pregnancy and get an abortion.
He was charged with murder and feticide in the death of 17-year-old Breana Rouhselang, a cheerleader at the school east of Sound Bend. Her mother told the authorities that she was six months pregnant, and an autopsy confirmed the pregnancy.
Trejo entered a preliminary plea of not guilty and will be held without bond. He told authorities he knew Breana was pregnant and that he was about to be a father. However, both of them didn’t want to have a baby.
The football player also said they had an argument about the child before he fatally stabbed her in the heart, according to the affidavit. He then covered her with a black plastic bag before throwing her body in a dumpster. He also threw the knife and her phone in a river.
“I took action … I took her life,” he admitted when asked by police what he did when he found out she had waited too long to get an abortion.
According to the affidavit, Trejo told authorities that “he had been planning and thinking about killing Breana and the baby for about a week and had not told anybody.”
An autopsy showed that Breana died from multiple stab wounds. She was also chocked with her scarf, according to the affidavit.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit Assistant Commander Lt. Alex Arendt said that the girl’s family had contacted the police to report her missing after they last saw her at home around midnight.
Arendt said: “Upon their arrival and a search of the area they found evidence of a possible violent crime.”
Police then found Breana’s body in a dumpster behind a business. According to court papers, a black plastic bag was covering her head and upper torso.
Mishawaka High School said in a statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends who have been affected by this great loss. Our focus now is to offer all of the support possible to our staff and students.”
