The whole world currently is facing a severe shortage of important medical supplies.
People have started making their own masks due to their shortage.
However, Ashley Lawrence who is a college student noticed that there are no masks available for the hard of hearing and the deaf community.
This is why she decided to make them on her own. Ashley studies at Eastern Kentucky University about deaf education. The twenty-one-year-old student hit a new project idea when she saw that the supply of suitable masks for deaf people is very limited.
She said that she saw on Facebook that individuals were creating masks for everyone and then she started wondering about what about hard of hearing and deaf population.
Then, she asked her mother for help and the duo began making masks specifically for deaf people.
People who cannot hear use lip-reading and American sign language to communicate and so, she decided to add a plastic window in the middle, where a person’s mouth is.
She realized that for such people to communicate, they need to see the lips of the other people.
Ashley added that when a person is wearing the mask, half of what they are saying gets missed even though they are using American sign language.
This makes it important for masks to have a see-through window so that a person who cannot hear can know what the other person is saying.
Ashley posted this creation on Facebook and within days, the demand for those masks exploded.
People began ordering the masks and Ashley is sending them to the people for free. To fund her noble deed, she created her GoFundMe campaign, where people can help her in paying for the supplies.
