Elon Musk has long been known for his maverick sense of innovation. Sure, a lot of his ideas fly in the face of established norms but it’s also that out-of-the-box type of thinking that has given us engineering marvels such as SpaceX and Tesla.

Speaking of Tesla cars, in typical Musk fashion, the tech mogul announced in a tweet that you will “soon” be able to stream both Netflix and YouTube inside the car. The videos will show up on the car’s display.

Musk has always viewed Tesla cars as an ideal entertainment hub because the car’s surround sound and chairs provide the perfect environment to provide users “an amazingly immersive, cinematic experience.”

Tesla drivers have already made the news several times after being caught on video using the car’s autopilot feature to sleep while the car was moving so it’s not a big stretch to imagine that drivers will want to watch Netflix and YouTube while the car is on the move.

However, the streaming capability will be dependent on the approval of regulators for Tesla’s self-driving function. However, Musk clarified that like the games “Cuphead” and “Super Breakout” the proposed video streaming will only work when the car is stopped, at least for now.

Musk did not say exactly when the streaming feature would come out but is optimistic that the next few months could see a few changes happening and even as soon as August more news could already come out.

Musk optimistically said in February that he was “certain” driverless Tesla cars would be a thing by the end of this year.

In an interview with ARK Invest, Musk said, “I think we will be feature-complete full self-driving this year, meaning the car will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up, take you all the way to your destination without an intervention — this year. I would say that I am certain of that. That is not a question mark.”

But even if Musk is a few months off the mark, past experience has shown that he eventually delivers on his promises and that can only be good news for Tesla owners.
