A 24-year-old was shopping at an Aldi supermarket in Pontefract, West Yorks when a kind stranger offered to pay for her to say ‘thank you’.
Isobelle Smithson was waiting in a line at an Aldi supermarket and was talking about her job to others in the line.
A stranger who was also in the line behind her offered to pay £50 for her shopping when he learned Isobelle is a nurse.
He wanted to say ‘thank you’ amid coronavirus outbreak and placed two £20 notes and a £10 in her trolley despite Isobelle refusing to take the money.
The mother-of-one was left shocked and in awe of the kindness of the stranger.
Isobelle, who works on a maternity ward at Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield, told The Sun: “People are really behind the NHS and that’s making such a massive difference. We all work together — we’re like a family. When it gets hard we just pull together and support one another.”
“To know the public are behind us is overwhelming.”
Isobelle shared the incident online as she told the kind stranger came up to her and asked if she was an NHS worker.
When she said, “Yes”, he gave her £50 and said: “Please use this for your shopping.”
Isobelle refused to take it but he put it down in her trolley and left after saying: “No, it’s from me and my wife, thank you for what you do.”
Isobelle was so touched by his gesture that she tracked him down and it turned out he is a primary school headteacher named Luke Welsh.
When Luke was asked about his act of kindness, he said he is glad to know how much it meant to the nurse and he simply wanted to say thank you.
He told The Sun: “I’m doing my bit but I’m not doing anything near what Isobelle is doing. They’re all incredible.”
