A store has been facing a backlash after it came to light that they’ve increased prices of toilet paper amid coronavirus scare in Australia.
As a Sydney-based woman revealed, she was shopping at a chemist in Potts Point when she was happy to see packs of toilet paper along with a welcoming message on the store window.
Soon enough, however, she realized that the price of the toilet paper has been inflated, whereas the store was selling packs of 18 rolls for $20 while admitting they’re selling single rolls for 99 cents per piece.
“Given I haven’t seen a roll anywhere in almost two weeks, I went in. These a**holes are profiteering by charging $20 a pack. Priceless,” the woman wrote in her Facebook post.
After her post went viral, people were quick to slam the store and accuse it of inflating prices.
“This is just wrong on so many levels, zero care for their community shown – It’s all about the money,” someone suggested.
“This is outrageous – let’s all remember this once this passes, I will never spend another dollar at a business like that,” another one wrote.
After the story went viral, the store’s spokesperson explained to Yahoo News that single rolls of toilet paper are being sold for 99 cents per piece. However, they didn’t explain why they’re selling packs of 18 rolls for $20.
“We don’t usually stock toilet paper but in response to the higher need for toilet paper we have been able to purchase single rolls from our supplier for a higher cost,” the spokesperson for Priceless Compounding Chemist said.
“A lot of elderly people and larger families haven’t been able to buy toilet rolls at supermarkets and most wholesalers are out, so we are doing what we can so the community is able to access it.”
