On January 26, 2018, the members of the popular rock band Fleetwood Mac received the MusiCares’ annual Person of the Year Award at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
When the band’s singer Stevie Nicks went onto the stage for the award, she used her award speech to pay tribute to her friend, Tom Petty. She was immediately brought to tears in remembrance in him.
Thomas Earl Petty, known as Tom Petty, died on 2nd of October 2017, and was a close friend of Stevie Nicks. He was also awarded for the same award earlier in the same year.
“The loss of Tom Petty has just about broken my heart,” Stevie said. “He was not only a good man to go down the river with, as Johnny Cash said, he was a great father, and he was a great friend — he was one of my best friends. My heart will never get over this.”
In Tom’s interview with the Toronto Sun, he explained that his long friendship with Stevie started back in 1970s.
“I’ve known her since 1978, and she’s insisted on being in my life,” he said. “Some of my best musical memories of her are sitting on the couch and just playing the guitar while she sings.”
Near the end of her speech, Stevie was overwhelmed with emotions when she began talking about her dear friend supporting her for so many years. “So Tom, I know you’re standing next to me because you always have been for so many years,” she said with tears coming out.
