Stella The Talking Dog Uses A Custom Soundboard To Communicate With Her Owner

Dog owners already know that their furry companions always communicate with them.

But sometimes, we don’t understand what they are trying to say.

That’s why a speech-language pathologist worked hard and discovered that her adorable pooch, Stella, can tell her things  – like she would prefer to eat instead of playing right now, she would like to go to the park, and she’s tired and would like to sleep.

26-year-old Christina Hunger made it possible through an adaptive device that help Stella communicate not just words but also her feelings and thoughts.

Whenever the Blue Heeler/Catahoula mix wants to ‘talk,’ she simply steps on buttons with words her owner recorded and programmed.

The smart pooch is already putting her amazing skills to work. There was a time when Stella was whining at the front door and she was walking back and forth.

Hunger thought that she just needed to go outside but then Stella went to the custom soundboard and pressed the buttons ‘Want,’ ‘Jake,’ and Come.’

She then stood in front of the door and Jake, Hunger’s fiancé, arrived. Stella pressed the ‘Happy’ button and rolled over to get a good belly rub.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Hunger said: “I’m in constant amazement and shock. Every day she says something cooler than she said the day before.”

Hunger, who also works with toddlers, many of whom use adaptive devices to help in communication, started teaching her loving pooch words when the dog was only 8 weeks old.

Stella now knows more than 29 words and can combine up to 5 words to make a sentence or a phrase.

“The way she uses words to communicate and the words she’s combining is really similar to a 2-year-old child,” said Hunger, who document’s Stella’s progress on Instagram.

Hunger also wants to teach other canines how to speak. “I think how important dogs are to their humans,” she expressed. “I just imagine how much deeper the bond will be.”
