According to the reports, the officials have confirmed they had sought advice from the Native Americans because the statue features Clark and Lewis along with a Shoshone woman who guided them across the land and its difficult terrain more than 200 years ago.

As the critics of the monument have argued, Sacagawea, the Native American who is seen crouching next to the two explorers, is featured in a subservient position next to the two standing men.

While many called for the ‘offensive’ statue to be removed, the monument’s defenders claimed the pose Sacagawea is portrayed in is directly linked to her job as a tracker and has nothing to do with her being accompanied by the two explorers.

“The City of Charlottesville truly is governed by fools.point 159 | They now are removing a statue of Lewis and Clark because – get this – they see a crouching Sacagawea figure as subservient when in fact she is crouching down because she is tracking (that is, leading) the explorers,” former US Congressman Bob Barr wrote on Twitter as he called out the city officials over their decision to have the historical statue removed.point 471 | 1
