Three States Consider Laws That Would Ban Trans Girls From Women’s Sports

Utah, Tennessee, and Mississippi are considering laws that would ban transgender girls from participating in women’s sports in the states’ universities and schools.

Critics have argued that trans athletes have an unfair advantage as they have greater bone mass, muscle volume, and strength.

Utah Senator Mitt Romney said during a Senate committee hearing: “I’ve got pictures of my eight granddaughters amongst grandsons behind me. They shouldn’t be competing with people who are physiologically in an entirely different category.”

Sen Romney continued: “I think boys should be competing with boys and girls should be competing with (girls) on the athletic field.”

But there are usually debates over the topic, and President Joe Biden already signed an executive order that bans discrimination based on gender identity in school sports and others.

Republican Senator Angela Hill of Picayune said: “I’ve had numerous coaches across the state call me and believe that they feel there’s a need for a policy in Mississippi because they are beginning to have some concerns of having to deal with this,’ said the bill’s sponsor.”

Mississippi Republican Governor Tate Reeves, a father of three girls, also took to Twitter and wrote: “I am so disappointed over President Biden’s actions to force young girls like them to compete with biological males for access to athletics.”

Senator Mike Lee of Utah also introduced a bill that would ban trans girls from competing in women’s sport at schools.

He said that the bill would protect “opportunities of girls throughout America to athletically compete against other girls.”

LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign condemned the anti-transgender bills in Mississippi and other states.

HRC said in a statement on Wednesday: “These bills are not addressing any real problem, and they´re not being requested by constituents. Rather, this effort is being driven by national far-right organisations attempting to sow fear and hate.”
