Brave Squirrel Stares Back At Bald Eagle In An Epic Tree-Top Confrontation

A brave squirrel was caught on camera facing off a bald eagle for ten long minutes in an epic tree-top confrontation that took place in Lincoln, Maine.

While the tiny animal was staring in the eyes of the predator, a photographer of 21 years was just passing by in his car and witnessed the rare incident.

Roger Stevens Jr.

Roger Stevens Jr. immediately stopped and snapped a few pictures of the confrontation. According to Roger, he never leaves his camera behind no matter where he goes.

For the following ten minutes, Stevens closely observed the pair while they were carefully observing each other’s moves.

“The squirrel just kept seeing how close it could get to the eagle. It would come up and just taunt him, dare him,” he recalled in an interview with Bangor Daily News.

“That squirrel seemed to know just how close it could get to the eagle to really make him mad.”

Jumping back and forth right in front of the large eagle, the daring squirrel appeared determined to protect its territory from the predator.

Remarkably, the rodent kept on reappearing despite losing ground several times and getting intimidated by the eagle that was flaring its wings.

“The squirrel went right up the tree three of four times and got in his face,” Stevens added.

“It’s like the little guy gets the big guy. That’s behavior you just don’t see.”

As the photographer claimed, the squirrel was most likely protecting its den from the predator. And fortunately, its persistence paid off, as the eagle flew away after ten minutes.

Despite being a photographer for 21 years, Stevens admitted that this was a “once in a lifetime” encounter.
