Captain Tom Moore, an army veteran, who managed to gather £21 million funds (still increasing) for the NHS by completing rounds of his garden is soon going to turn 100 and for making the special occasion, a Spitfire flypast is being planned.
Moore had originally planned to raise £1,000 only by completing 100 laps of the garden before turning 100 as a means to thank the NHS for its marvelous help Tom had received over the years.
However, as Tom continued the rounds of his 25-meter garden in Bedfordshire’s Marston Moretaine, the donations kept on increasing and before he even realized, he raised millions for the NHS.
To make Tom’s birthday extra special, an aircraft restorers team now hopes to fly WWII-era Spitfire over Tom’s home to mark Tom’s 100th birthday on the 30th of this month.
21-years-old Alex Monk of South-East London’s Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar said that the flypast would be serving as a grand salute to Tom’s fundraising effort.
He said that it would be a morale-booster for everyone to witness a Spitfire flying in the sky. He added that it had been the freedom symbol in the past as well as an icon for Captain Moore.
He noted that Tom knew what Spitfire means more than anyone and would love the experience of seeing and hearing the Spitfire in the air dedicated to him.
Captain Moore revealed that the NHS had been extraordinary in helping the man recover from skin cancer and hip replacement over the years.
Tom’s daughter set up the fundraiser and she noted that the amount collected was Tom’s way of thanking the NHS.
She added that Tom wishes to walk as long as people keep investing in him because it is for a noble cause.
Captain Moore was overwhelmed by such an enormous response and added that although the total amount of money was difficult to imagine, it had been coming in really well.
