Last year, FBI’s ‘Varsity Blue’ operation stirred massive controversy in the US. The scandal had to do with bribery to influence college admissions in America. A total of 53 individuals were accused, which included celebrities as well.
Felicity Huffman, who has been married to fellow actor William H. Macy, was one of the celebrities who were accused. In the end, the former star of the hit show Desperate Housewives was sentenced to 14 days in prison, along with a $30,000 fine and 250 hours of community service.
The eldest of the couple’s two daughters, Sofia Macy, announced that she has been accepted to Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama on her Instagram account. She posted an Instagram story with the caption “CMU Drama 24”, indicating that she has been accepted into the university as the class of 2024.
During the trial, Huffman said that she did $15,000 to bribe a school proctor to increase Sofia’s PSAT scores. In a letter that Huffman sent to the court, she said that she worried that her daughter would not be able to pursue her dream career because of her math score.
Huffman confessed that she had “betrayed” her daughter. Huffman strongly alleged that her daughter did not know of the bribery. After she heard of what had went down, Sofia sent a letter to her mother lamenting her mother’s lack of faith in her.
Whether Sofia knew it or not, the prosecutors revealed that her PSAT scores were increased by 400 points because of the bribery. However, they did not confirm if this disingenuous score was submitted during the college admissions process.
William Macy was also known to be present when his wife discussed the transaction. However, Macy did not face any charges. The reasoning behind his exemption was not clarified by the prosecutors.
Meanwhile, the school that accepted Sofia Macy is one of the most prestigious institutions in the US. Founded in 1914, CMU’s school of Drama is the oldest degree program in the US. It has since produced many stars of Broadway and Hollywood – from Leslie Odom Jr. to Ethan Hawke.
