A 57-year-old Los Angeles socialite has been charged with the murder of two brothers, aged 9 and 11.
Rebecca Grossman, a co-founder of the Grossman Burn Foundation, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence after crashing her speeding Mercedes into Jacob and Mark Iskander in September.
She has been charged with two counts of murder for the hit-and-run incident that claimed the lives of the brothers.
If convicted, she could face 34 years to life in prison, the District Attorney’s office said. Her bail has also been set at $2 million.
The 57-year-old is said to have only stopped a mile and a half away when her engine cut out.
According to Capt. Salvador Becerra, the children were walking with their family when the tragic incident happened.
11-year-old Mark died at the scene while his younger brother passed away a few hours later in a hospital.
“It is a very tragic situation. The mother and father were able to pull the other two children back in time, and the vehicle struck the two other children,” Becerra said.
One of the boys was carried 100ft on the hood of Grossman’s car before she stopped. The boy fell off the Mercedes and she ran him over again before fleeing the scene.
Grossman only stopped more than a mile and a half away as her car cut out.
Jacob and Mark were both members of the Archangel Michael Coptic Orthodox Church.
The church wrote: “Our beloved angels/deacons Mark & Jacob Iskander departed to our heavenly father our Lord Jesus Christ after being hit by a car last night.”
According to Daily Mail, Grossman was also involved in a 2012 accident, during which the other claimed the socialist ran a red light while driving more than 60mph in a 40mph zone.
