As far as offenses go, jaywalking seems like a pretty innocent crime. That’s why pedestrians the world over do it and if you’re honest with yourself, you’ve probably done it a few times, too. However, what many people don’t realize is that they’re betting their lives every time they jaywalk. Just think about it. A 137-pound person (the average weight of a human adult) vs. a 3-ton vehicle, who do you think would win?
It’s like the argument about the extremely low probability of being hit by lightning. You just need to be hit once. But despite all the logical arguments and awareness campaigns, it’s extremely difficult to stop people from jaywalking short of putting up physical barriers on the sidewalks.
In this video by Serviceplan, it seems that officials in Paris thought that the best way to educate jaywalkers is to scare them out of their wits. A billboard containing a camera is strategically placed facing the pedestrian crossing. Once a person jaywalks, a loud sound recording of a car screeching on the pavement as it suddenly brakes is played. At the same time, the jaywalker is photographed and the photo displayed on the billboard with the message, “Don’t take the risk of facing death.”
With over 4,500 pedestrian deaths a year just in Paris, this awareness campaign has to be commended because it’s a message that jaywalkers won’t soon forget.
While the reactions of the jaywalkers were funny, the message behind it is a very serious matter indeed:
