Instead of the old parable that opened the show that went “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night Live”, this was what Kate McKinnon greeted us with at yesterday’s show, which commenced its current season taking in full heed along with social distancing policy throughout the nation.
Talk show hosts including Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel etc. have been hosting their shows in their houses, and SNL, after its hiatus from March 28 has decided to follow the more popular and law-abiding option.
The comedic timing and the writing, although somewhat different from the previous mega-set format, the comedians and the writers gave it their best shot, with Tom Hanks actually hosting the show through a very open and sardonic remarks about himself to fuse up the funny air.
“It’s good to be here, but it’s also weird to be here hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’ from home,” Hanks started his satire from his kitchen. “It is a strange time to try and be funny, but trying to be funny is ‘SNL’s’ whole thing, so what the heck, let’s give it a shot.”
“This ‘Saturday Night Live’ is going to be a little different, for one thing it’s been filmed entirely by the ‘SNL’ cast who are currently quarantined in their homes. … Also, there’s no such thing as Saturdays anymore, and we’re not really live, but we’re doing everything we can to make this feel like the ‘SNL’ you know and love.”
“Ever since being diagnosed I have been more like America’s dad than ever before since no one wants to be around me very long and I make people uncomfortable,” Hanks said.
The show also featured Larry David as Sen. Bernie Sanders from his armchair, trying to explain his recent dropout from the presidential race, Pete Davidson singing Drake’s song his mom’s basement, and last but not least, the jostling “Weekend Update: Home Edition” with Colin Jost and Michael Che.
And nobody had it like Alec Baldwin, where he gave a phone call to the show in his alter ego, the POTUS.
“My approval rating is up, my TV ratings are through the roof and every night at 7 p.m. all of New York claps and cheers for the great job I’m doing,” Baldwin as Trump gave his very characteristic speech.
Baldwin’s Trump then went on to say that “we have to listen to the experts on this one” including his senior adviser Jared Kushner, Fox News host Sean Hannity and MyPillow inventor and infomercial star Mike Lindell.
“All absentee ballots are covered in coronavirus,” Baldwin’s Trump said. “Happy Easter, everybody!”
