A young man has been described as ‘hopeless’ by his own lawyer after messing up a smuggling deal worth $200 million.
28-year-old Simon Tu was driving a white van in Sydney’s Eastwood when he rammed into two empty, parked police vehicles while passing by a local police station.
After crashing into the two cars, Tu fled the scene but allegedly kept on driving. After an hour, the police managed to track down his van and question the young man about his actions.
According to the reports, Tu told the authorities that he fell asleep while delivering food around the city. What the cops found in his van, however, was not food but nearly 600 pounds of crystal methamphetamine reportedly worth $200 million.
On Thursday, the failed smuggler appeared in front of NSW District Court Judge Penelope Hock for a final hearing.
“His driving is what gave it away, and his role was to drive. In some senses it was a hopeless execution of the task he was asked to perform,” Tu’s attorney, Phillip Boulten SC, told the court as he pointed out that his client was at the lower end of the drug supply chain.
While Tu didn’t elaborate his reasons for getting involved in drug smuggling or provide details about the $200 million meth deal, his lawyer suggested that the young man likely owed money to some people because he “was using cocaine” and “gambling.”
After pleading guilty to commercial drug supply earlier this year, Tu faces up 20 years in prison. He is set to be sentenced on Friday.
