McDonald’s just opened a smaller version of the fast food restaurant and it caters for bees!
The restaurant, McHive, has room for thousands of special guests. It is completed with impressive detail, including the famous golden arches, drive-thru bays, seating, and signage.
It is no secret that bee colonies are dying at alarming rates. In the US, 44 percent of colonies died in 2016. Things like intensive farming practices, diesel fumes and overuse of pesticides have contributed, and if there will be no improvements we could soon run out of food supply.
Bees are an essential part of our ecosystems. They pollinate about three-quarters of our crops and if these hardworking creatures continue to die, we can say goodbye to the harvests that we need to survive.
To help create a sustainable environment in their communities, many restaurants in Sweden have beehives on their rooftops.
The initiative started in one of the restaurants and has started to spread across Sweden.
To pay tribute for the initiative, the McDonald’s Sweden team has opened the smallest restaurant ever!
The bees can enter through McHive’s main entrance and the restaurant caters for thousands of hardworking creatures. In case they want to enjoy their Happy Meal outside, the restaurant has outdoor seating and also a McDrive.
Christoffer Rönnblad, marketing director of McDonald’s Sweden, said in an interview with Adweek: “We have a lot of really devoted franchisees who contribute to our sustainability work, and it feels good that we can use our size to amplify such a great idea as beehives on the rooftops.”
It is important to save bees as they pollinate our plants. Without these beautiful creatures, the planet will suffer.
