Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, accounting for 9.8 million deaths last year. Apart from taking lives, it also kills hundreds of dreams after it gets diagnosed.
Some people have plans to travel the world, while others want to marry the love of their lives, but after the diagnosis, everything is shattered.
Often, friends will leave the patient in hard times, lovers who promised to spend the rest of the days together also turn their back, allowing Cancer to take life quickly than expected. But this beautiful young couple from Queensland has shown the world what “true love” really is.
Joanne Coleman was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) was diagnosed when she was 20 years old, in 2016. She was having wisdom toothache which didn’t go away even after taking medicines.
One day she woke up with a swollen face. Her loving parents rushed her to the doctor. Joanne told, “Doctors said it was just an infected wisdom tooth and that the worst case scenario was that it would be cancer.”
Unfortunately, when the results came out and she came to know about the disease, it literally has the rug swept from under your feet. Doctors told the family that she is suffering from skin cancer where most part of her face is infected.
Doctors also said that a kiwi fruit-sized tumor had to be removed quickly to stop the spread of cancer. When Joanne heard about it, she didn’t even shed a single tear, rather her reaction was, “Sh** happens”.
The surgery took almost 23 hours and as a result, she lost her sinus, half her mouth and got one of her eye removed. She was still brave enough to accept the reality but her only worry was that maybe her fiance would not like her anymore.
Yet, she was happy that her family and her lover were always beside her.
Unfortunately, one year after the surgery, cancer returned back and this time it was almost incurable. Doctors performed the surgery again but have to tell the heartbreaking news that Joanne has just one year left.
It was that time when her fiance proposed her and said that he wanted to spend the last few days with her. Their families reached out to My Wedding Wish to help them plan the nuptials.
‘I won’t be around for the wedding,’ she had told Josh at the time but luckily she was able to still fight cancer and got married last year in front of 175 teary-eyed friends and family.
Indeed nothing is impossible when you have your loved ones around you in the difficult times.
