Two people have been arrested as of today in connection to a road rage shooting that occurred in California.
The case involves the death of six-year-old boy, Aiden Leos.
The suspects are Wynne Lee, 23, and Marcus Anthony Eriz, 24, were taken into custody over the death of Leos. They were arrested outside of their home located in Costa Mesa on Sunday.
The California Highway Patrol said that the pair are dating and are expected to be charged with counts of murder over his death.
According to online jail records, Eriz works in the auto industry. Both of the individuals are being held on $1 million bail each and are scheduled to go to court this upcoming Tuesday.
Aiden, 6, was fatally shot during a road-rage incident while his mother, Joanna Cloonan, was driving along the 55 freeway in Orange County. They were on their way to drop off Aiden to kindergarten.
Highway patrol officers made a comment about the incident, saying that it had stemmed from a “perceived unsafe lane change.point 379 |
” According to his mother and other witnesses who stopped by to help her, the road rage incident had unfolded when the driver of a white, Volkswagen Golf Sportswagen had cut off Aiden’s mother in the carpool lane.point 188 | 1
Because of the cutoff, the mother had stuck up her middle finger at the driver, and then another car and been behind her, shooting a bullet to the rear of her car. It struck Aiden to the back, causing his death.
His mother had pulled over and held her son until an off-duty police officer came by to help and perform CPR. The paramedics soon arrived but when he was rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been started by Aiden’s family to make up the $50,000 reward in helping them catch the culprits.
California Highway Patrol Commissioner Amanda Ray comments, “On behalf of Border Division Chief Omar Watson and the Santa Ana Area, we are deeply grateful for the professionalism and tireless commitment of our investigators who have worked on this case from day one to find those responsible for Aiden’s death.”
The couple responsible are being held in custody in Orange County. District Attorney Todd Spitzer has urged those responsible to turn themselves in.
