31-year-old Ollie White, a Somerset farmer, has recruited adorable companions to guard his chickens and geese.

He has brought cute Nala and Lula, Maremma Sheepdog puppies from Italy to watch over his poultry.

Dogs like Nala and Lula have been used across Europe for around 2,000 years to help in keeping livestock safe from predators.

“Here we’re focused on raising our animals free-range but obviously that leads to issues in keeping them safe,” Ollie said.

“Previously we’ve had geese murdered right outside the farmhouse by foxes. Of course the trouble is a fox won’t just stop at one chicken once it’s got the chance.”

The two cute dogs’ job is to guard the chickens and geese on the farm and shoo away attackers like foxes and badgers.

“By using the dogs it’s a more natural process overall, the dogs scare the foxes away, so no one dies, it’s just nature managing to coexist,” Ollie added.

At only 10 weeks old, Nala and Lula are getting trained up. They will soon learn to protect their companions even better.

In the UK, maremmas are an uncommon sight. Ollie got the idea after visiting the US in 2015 as he saw how the dogs could deter predators from attacking farm animals.

“For a dog a goose is a good meal, but once they’re trained, that instinct to protect takes over and they’re just focused on keeping them safe,” Ollie said.

“They’re very playful but calm at the same time and there’s a definite intelligence behind their eyes, they know what’s going on.”
