While sharks aren’t new to the region, experts have picked interest in their presence after 10 of them have emerged in the span of just a few days.

According to Ocearch, a marine wildlife tracking company that tagged the sea beasts, the majority of the newcomers were spotted off the coast of Carolinas and all the way down to Florida, whereas a few appeared as high as off the shore of Virginia.

The Carolina Coast, Georgia Coast, and Florida Coast are known as the “winter hot spot for large great white sharks.”

According to Jacksonville University’s Assistant Professor and OCEARCH scientist Dr. Bryan Franks, “the body of colder water trapped between the Gulf Stream and the coast is a key feature of this region.”

“This ‘wedge’ of cold water extends from the Outer Banks in North Carolina down to Cape Canaveral in Florida. This feature results in a range of water temperatures in a relatively short horizontal distance from the coast out to the Gulf Stream,” the Marine Science expert added.

“In addition, there is the potential for abundant prey in the migrating populations along the coastlines and in the dynamic mixing zone on the Stream edge.”
