An 83-year-old died while serving his prison sentence for playing loud music at his home.
The incident took place in Aintree, England, where Ian Trainer, 83, was repeatedly jailed for playing loud music at his Eton Drive home despite complaints from his neighbors.
According to the reports, the elderly man was banned from playing “any audio at a volume above normal talking level” between 9 am and 10 pm back in 2019 after a neighbor complained about Trainer’s noise pollution that had allegedly been going on for years.
After breaking the restraining order, the senior man was jailed. Following his release in February, the senior continued playing loud music, prompting the authorities to arrest and jail him once more.
As the Liverpool Magistrates Court heard back in February, Trainer’s loud music had been affecting his neighbors for years. After the police visited the senior man’s home back in December following a complaint, Trainer allegedly told them he likes “playing music at a level” he enjoys.
According to a previous report by The Liverpool Echo, the court also heard how the 83-year-old was deaf on one ear and how he couldn’t wear earphones because of a medical condition.
As the authorities now confirmed, Trainer has passed away while serving his sentence. “HMP Liverpool prisoner Ian Trainer died in hospital on 23 November. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed,” a spokesperson for the Prison Service announced.
Following the elderly man’s passing, people were left divided over Trainer’s sentence whereas many suggested the man should have received help rather than a sentence.
“Absolutely disgraceful to jail a pensioner for playing loud music as he is deaf, may you hang your heads in shame over this. Surely he should have been helped not jailed,” Jeanette Buhagiar suggested.
“This poor man should have been treated for his ears or his mental health looked at as to why he kept on breaching the restrictions,” Sasha Iddon said.
“What a shame. Poor man was probably just reliving memories. Real criminals on the streets roaming free that need locking up,” Jennifer Tyrrell added.
While many people defended the 83-year-old, some suggested he shouldn’t be exempt from law just because of his age.
“Just because he was 83 doesn’t excuse him from being ignorant. He was a repeat offender and continually ignored the courts and the police. Are people meant to live with music blaring all day and night next to them and brush it off,” Ryan O’Hanlon said.
“This didn’t happen just recently. This had been going on for years and he wasn’t interested in changing. Yes it is sad that he has died but the solution was in his own hands and he refused to change,” Irene Preston insisted.
