A senator blasted Republican Congress members as he claimed they were “deathly afraid” of the former president Donald Trump.

According to Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, who is a Democrat, Republican lawmakers were afraid to vote to convict Trump because of his strong position in the GOP.

As Murphy also expressed on CNN’s State of the Union, he believes that Trump will continue ruling the Republican Party for the next four years even though he is out of office.

“I know that Senate Republican caucus well. The rest of them, I think, had effectively made the decision that Donald Trump is going to be in charge of their party for the next four years,” the senator said while referring to 43 Republican lawmakers who ensured Trump’s acquittal.

“As they were deathly afraid of him for the last four years, they are going to continue to be afraid of him for the next four years.”

Murphy’s comments follow shortly after the Senate acquitted Trump in a tight vote. While 57 lawmakers voted to convict and only 43 voted to acquit, the Senate failed to achieve the two-thirds threshold required for a successful conviction.

As the senator added, he believes that other Republicans wouldn’t change their mind no matter how long the debate would go on.

“There were seven of them who were willing to stand up for the Constitution, but I don’t know that there were more than seven no matter what they did or how much longer the trial went,” Murphy added.

Shortly after getting acquitted by the Senate, former POTUS Donald Trump celebrated the news with a statement in which he claimed that the “historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.”

“In the months ahead, I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people,” Trump wrote.
