A second person has passed away from a mysterious lung illness linked to vaping, according to health officials.

The patient passed away shortly after using an e-cigarette with THC, bought form a recreational marijuana dispensary.

Dr. Ann Thomas, the lead investigator on the case and a public health physician at OHA’s Public Health Division, said that the person was ‘otherwise healthy and quickly became very ill.’ Before the patient’s death, a ventilator was required, according to the New York Times.

The patient’s symptoms before death were in line with those of more than 200 reported cases of lung illnesses nationwide linked to vaping currently being investigated by the Centers for Disease Control.

Their doctor discovered this weeks after the death and informed the health officials about it for further investigation.

Thomas said they don’t know yet if it was the marijuana substance in the vape pen that caused the person’s death. However, it was a legally bought product and not a counterfeit item.

“At this point, we’d say we don’t really know what is safe,” Thomas said.

Illinois health officials recently announced that a state resident had passed away of a severe lung illness after vaping, the first reported death in the United States linked to e-cigarettes.

After the first person’s death, the CDC announced their investigation into more than 200 reported cases of severe respiratory illness linked to vaping.

Health officials are urging people who use e-cigs to watch for symptoms such as chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and vomiting. It is recommended to seek medical assistance right away.

“We need to keep finding ways to reach to public to do what it takes to keep young people safe,” Thomas added. “I know that sounds a little dramatic but at this point we don’t know what’s causing it.”
