Speaking of the majestic creatures, photographer and animal enthusiast Ian McAllister said that sea wolves approached him as he was waiting in ambush to photograph them.

“We know from exhaustive DNA studies that these wolves are genetically distinct from their continental kin. They are behaviorally distinct, swimming from island to island and preying on sea animals,” he said according to Bored Panda.

“They are also morphologically distinct — they are smaller in size and physically different from their mainland counterparts.”

Another lucky person who got to see these animals in person was filmmaker Bertie Gregory who, according to the National Geographic, said: “There is something about being in the presence of a coastal wolf—they just have this magic and aura around them.”

“Coastal wolves are such a unique predator, and they are hunting in this absolutely epic landscape,” the producer added, claiming that his one-of-a-kind experience inspired him to create a series dedicated to sea wolves for NatGeo.

As the NatGeo article on the topic went on to explain, sea wolves are divided into two groups, those who live on the coast of mainland and those who live on the coast of islands, whereas the main difference between them is that island sea wolves eat more seafood and are even more dependent on the sea for their survival.
