The FeBrina is a liveaboard dive boat that ferries scuba divers from around the world to experience the ocean around Papua New Guinea. Magnificent sea animals and breathtaking corals await these divers who traveled so far to experience these sights.

One dive group surfaced to find four canoes filled with women and children from one of the fishing villages in a remote island. Because of their isolation, these villagers live a more traditional lifestyle with little access to the modern marvels of civilization.

While their proximity to Nature is a marvel, everything that we take for granted in more developed parts of the world is scarce, such as access to health care, education, and the Internet.

The people of this village know the crew of the FeBrina well as its crew has been quietly helping the villagers whenever they drop by. The villagers offer fresh vegetables and coconuts while the crew exchange cooking supplies, rice, and other necessities in return. Even more importantly, the crew also do small fundraisers to buy school books and other important supplies for the village.

It was certainly a different ocean encounter than what the divers were expecting but not an unwelcome one. One of them, a Canadian named Kristy, gave chocolates to the kids which were a big hit.

Her husband Dave also took out his iPhone and showed the villagers how the camera worked. Selfies soon followed which the kids found to be a unique and enjoyable experience.

The couple was touched at how the boat’s crew quietly but consistently provided help in their own way, proving that one doesn’t need riches to have a compassionate heart and a giving hand. It’s an experience like no other that’s made the more meaningful because it helps other people improve their lives.
