We often don’t realize that taking notes is so easy these days.
There are so many ways such as audio recordings. taking a video and teachers can also share their presentations online. It makes you wonder how people did this tedious task with just pen and paper. But what many people don’t know is that people back then had their own secret writing system to make note-taking faster and easier.
So what was this secret behind note-taking?
You might have heard the expression of people writing in “shorthand.” This writing system is exactly what it’s called, it’s designed to be faster for people than writing in cursive. Below is an example of what the method looks like, as was developed by John Robert Gregg from his book, Gregg Shorthand; A Light-Line Phonography for the Million.
Gregg’s idea was to use symbols that represent sounds instead of traditional letters, this helped him reduce all the letters as simple as possible.point 130 | This was convenient because letters can make more than one sound.point 185 | For example, a “K” sound was used for both a “hard C” and the letter “K.point 258 |

If a person could learn how to use this system, they could write around 280 words per minute. This is amazing because the average person speaks at a rate of 125 to 150 words a minute. This meant that writing in shorthand became a crucial part of various career fields such as jobs in legal, medical and secretarial fields because note-taking is extremely important in those fields.
