Schools Outside Birmingham and London May Re-Open Next Month Under the Ministers Plan


Ministers are planning to reopen certain primary schools as well as nurseries next month.

The entire Britain could be divided into different groups based on the risks, so that adults may also be able to go back to work.

Scientific adviser and Public Health have created guidance for the Cabinet Office and Downing Street on how they can ease the social distancing measures with minimum risks.

Denmark recently became the first country in Europe to reopen its schools, post which Britain has also begun to consider it.

Schools were closed in the country four weeks before when the cases of coronavirus began to a surge. As of now, the coronavirus cases in Britain have crossed over 98,000 with over 12,868 fatalities.

Moreover, the Department of Education has announced that the results for GSCE will be declared on August 20th, 2020 (Thursday), whereas it will declare A level results on August 13th, 2020 (Thursday). These dates were set before the closing of the schools.

While the exams are canceled, teachers will grade the students and pupils based on their academic performance.

Danish students will continue to follow the rules of social distancing and sit at a distance of 2-metres apart. However, the classes have started again, which is a hopeful sign for students who are stuck in homeschooling.

In the beginning, schools in the region where there is no major outbreak will be the ones to reopen first. Considering that Birmingham and London are COVID-19 hotspots, they are less likely to see their schools reopening.

According to the researchers of University College London, the closure of schools did not have a major impact on coronavirus spread.

And it might have only reduced the deaths by merely 2-4%. This report was based on the fact that young adults who are in their 20s have a very low death rate- around 0.03%.

This study has generated interest among the cabinet ministers. Reopening schools would also mean that parents can go to their work, which will be a good thing for the economy.

The severe implications of the situation on the economy have created a rift between the ministers about when and how the lockdown can be ended.

Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, who has been considered as the “hawk” wants to reopen the schools and get things back to normal as soon as possible. Other cabinet ministers are advocating for people to get back by the next month.

The minister said that people have followed the rules of lockdown and stayed inside their homes. Schools have been closed, and business has been shut down, which was more than what anybody thought would happen.

And it is important that the country does not suffer more damage with the lockdown. He further added that they are looking for three more weeks post which, they can think about easing the restrictions.
