School workers are distributing free packed lunches to students who are in self-isolation amid coronavirus outbreak.
After Boris Johnson announced all UK schools will remain close amid coronavirus fears, schools have decided to deliver free packed lunches to its students.
Spire Junior School in Derbyshire is one of those schools that are delivering free packed lunches to students who usually get a free school meal.
The headteacher Dave Shaw said they are open but a lot of students have decided to self-isolate at home.
A team of staff is delivering food during the normal school lunchtime to those students who normally receive free meals.
Headteacher Dave Shaw said: “We are in an area of high-deprivation so we want to ensure the kids still get some meals, it’s as if they’re on a school trip, we are doing them packed lunches.”
The school has already delivered free packed lunches to 15 families in the area after starting the scheme yesterday.
The school is now planning to donate its free breakfasts to a community kitchen in order to allow the families to collect the food on a daily basis.
The Cumberland School in Plaistow, East London, is also giving packed lunch to its students who are self-isolating at home.
The headteacher Omar Deria told that a lot of their students are from deprived backgrounds and the school doesn’t want them to miss the free meal they usually get at the school.
The teachers at the school are putting together packed lunches in the canteen before loading them up into the minibus to deliver them to students who are not attending the school.
The headteacher told the Newham Recorder: “This is a really personal thing for us. Two staff members are driving the bus around and delivering lunch to every child who would have got one if they were here.”
The school has already delivered almost 50 packed lunches but the number is increasing day by day as more and more are self-isolating at home.
