School Under Investigation After Video Of Teacher Keeping A Child In ‘Seclusion Room’ Went Viral


A school has come under fire after the footage of their teacher aide keeping a student in a seclusion room and preventing him from leaving went viral.

The incident occurred at the Gages Lake School in Lake County where the school aide kept a boy with hyperactivity disorder in a secluded room and stopped him from leaving.

The footage came to light after young Staley Sandy-Ester, the boy seen in the pictures, reported to his parents that he was put in a “scary office” at the therapeutic school.

As seen in the footage obtained by the authorities after an inquest into the controversial practice was launched, the female aide blocked the seclusion room’s exit before grabbing and shoving the boy to the side of the room after he attempted to kick her.

After ProPublica and the Tribune came up with a joint review of the controversial seclusion rooms, the state officials have temporarily banned the practice pending a thorough investigation.

“I couldn’t finish viewing it, I couldn’t do it,” Staley’s distressed mother said after watching the video.

“This is messed up and other people need to hear about it. I want to be a part of something to stop this from happening to another child.”

According to the reports, at least eight kids from the school had been subjected to the “inhumane” treatment during the month the footage was taken.

Following the incident going viral, two aides have resigned whereas one of them is facing charges for the use of excessive force. As for the female aide in the video, she committed suicide after an inquest into the school’s practices.
