The school districts have been installing washing machines and dryers in an effort to support students dealing with homelessness.
It has also been shown that providing laundry facilities helps to improve attendance rates.
The principal of Maya High School in Phoenix, Arizona found that some of his students were skipping school because they don’t have clean clothes to wear.
But he chose to take matters into his own hands and decided to find the best possible solution to this problem.
Principal John Anderson came up with the idea after discovering that many of the school’s students which are more than 30% are homeless and they have to sleep on a friend’s couch or even in the park.
Those students were hesitant to even show up for school just because they were not able to wash their clothing.
Anderson decided to take any action after he spoke directly to one student who clarified that his family did not provide him with the basic resources he needed to succeed in school.
The school’s special projects coordinator shared her hardships that she had to face during school, “I’m very much connected to them. I come from a homeless background, living in abandoned buildings, without shoes, washing every single day the same pair of garments.
But kids don’t want to be around you, going to school smelling.
They think about you. And when you concentrate on your self-esteem, it is just really hard to focus on your career”.
Students just wanted to get their diplomas to get over this kind of lives and this was not the case in which they did not need this help or have said ” They just do not care”.
But rather, they wanted to bring a change.
But there were some budgetary issues as well.
The principal explained that he was trying to get to grips with the issue in different ways, but their budget was too low so he opted for the grant road.
The grant was provided to them by Arizona Diamondbacks, Leona Group and Fiesta bowl.
An old wardrobe just off the cafeteria is a popular spot for students.
Seniors students Stephanie and Anntania explained how this made a huge difference in the lives of some of their classmates.
Principal Jhon Anderson says, “We will take on any obstacle and they will make no excuses.
I really don’t see it as a handout. It’s just a hand up.
Those children are survivors; they are warriors. ”
