Rent For A Backyard Shed In San Diego Is $1,050 A Month

When it comes to the high cost of living in the United States, most people will first think of New York City.

That they’d be right. New York tops the list of most expensive cities to live in out of the whole country. Not only that, but the city also has the dubious distinction of being among the Top 10 most expensive cities to live in the whole world (although it’s only no. 9 on that list; the top 3 most expensive cities in the world are Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Singapore).

But there are also other cities within the US that also have a high cost of living and of the Top 10 most expensive cities in the US, half of them are located in California.

This is probably why rental company J.D. Property Management in San Diego thinks that people are getting a really good deal out of a backyard shed that is being rented out for $1,050 a month. Yup, you heard that right. The company says that the price is pretty good for the location especially since it costs $300 less than what a typical studio goes for in the same area.

But other residents in the same North Park neighborhood don’t seem convinced. North Park is one of San Diego’s most walkable neighborhoods and the listing tags the shed as a studio. But there are doubts.

Joe Moreno, who lives nearby, said, “I was amazed it was going for that much money. Does it have plumbing? I mean, does it have facilities?”

According to the listing, the 200-square-foot “studio” has plumbing, a stove, an air conditioner, and a small refrigerator. However, it doesn’t have a washer and dryer nor parking.

J.D. Property Management insists that the price is reasonable especially since the former tenant paid $1,100/month for two years.

The San Diego Union-Tribune

Housing industry analyst Alan Nevin commented, “Maybe it is high for what it is offered at, but the reality is that the square footage and the location are exactly what this market needs.”

Whatever one might think of the price, there are still stringent requirements for interested applicants. Prospective tenants should have a credit score of 650 and have an income that is 2-1/2 times the rental amount. Furthermore, the applicant should have no history of evictions and must have rental references.
