Video footage has emerged that shows a girl screaming as a Russian priest forces her head underwater during baptism because ‘Satan is inside her’.
Russian priest named Ilia Semiletov is seen pushing the naked child’s head three times in the font in Yessentuki, south-west Russia, leaving the girl terrified.
He will face a church court now.
However, the girl’s parents did not register a complaint and did not intervene when he was pushing the child’s head in the font.
The mother admitted the girl ‘cried because she was scared of the priest’.
A parishioner Liliya Reznikova said that the priest had told her that children must be ‘broken’ during the baptism because ‘Satan is sitting inside them’.
She said: ‘I remember how I was scared when he began to speak this nonsense.’
The Russian Orthodox Church will take action against the priest.
Archpriest Mikhail Samokhin, of the Pyatigorsk and Circassian diocese, said:
‘The priest acted too harshly. He has been suspended from officiating at services and he will he will be judged by the church court.’
Semiletov is a priest at St George’s Convent in Yessentuki, in Russia’s Stavropol region.
The video recently went viral. However, the baptism was two years ago.
The mother posted on her social media account after the video went viral:
‘My daughter was two then. She was crying because she was afraid of the priest. She was in church for the first time.’
‘We are very grateful to the priest that he agreed to baptize her.’
