For the first time since 2012, the Rolling Stones have released a new single titled “Living In A Ghost Town”. Despite what the name suggests, the legendary band said that the bulk of the song was recorded prior to the global pandemic in February 2019.
In an interview with Apple Music, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards did say that they recently changed some of the lyrics so that it wouldn’t depress the listeners too much. The single will be a part of a new full album that is still being worked on. Finishing touches on the track completed remotely.
Jagger added that everyone agreed this was a track that fit the times perfectly. Richards said that he got working with Jagger as soon as things started getting worse because it could resonate in these times.
The band said they didn’t have a pandemic like this one in mind, although the original lyrics did have a lot of “plague terms” according to Jagger. They said they imagined once lively place that became void of life as time passed by.
The band said that initially, the revision process had a humorous atmosphere, albeit in the dark British taste. However, as the situation worsened, they recall how the tone started to get less and less humorous.
Jagger said that the unexpected precociousness of the song is bizarre and surprising to the Stones as well. For a song that he started jamming and basically finished in 10 minutes, Jagger said how it is a “little strange” how much well the track explains the current situation.
Like virtually all other musicians, the Stones have suspended all tour schedules. From major music festivals such as the Glastonbury Festival to individual concert venues, almost all cultural activities have been put to a halt as they are deemed non-essential across the globe.
Asked how they are adjusting to new like in the era of social distancing, the band said that they are working on new tracks. Richards expected 5 or 6 more tracks in the upcoming album. Although he can’t quite explain why, Richards said that everyone was working with more zest.
Richards ended the interview by saying that “Obviously right now we’ve got nothing else to do but write some more songs, right?”
