Former Senator John McCain’s mother, Roberta McCain, has passed away at the age of 108.
Announcing the death of the American socialite who was married to U.S. Naval Admiral John S. ‘Jack’ McCain Jr. was Cindy McCain, Roberta’s daughter-in-law, who wrote:
“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my wonderful Mother In-law, Roberta McCain. I couldn’t have asked for a better role model or a better friend. She joins her husband Jack, her son John and daughter Sandy.”
Paying a tribute to the centenarian who remained politically active in her 90s was also her granddaughter, Meghan McCain, who thanked her grandmother for teaching her “all about living life on your own terms.”
“I love you Nana. You’re everything I ever aspired to be. Thank you for teaching us all about living life on your own terms with grit, conviction, intensity and love,” Meghan wrote in a post on Twitter.
“There will never be another one like you, you will be missed every day. I wish my daughter had gotten to meet you.”
Roberta McCain was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, in 1912. At the age of 20, she defied her family and got married to John ‘Jack’ McCain Jr., a Navy admiral who served in the United States Navy from 1931 to 1972.
Together, the couple raised three children including Joe, Sandy, and John, who became a U.S. senator and ran for the presidency two times.
In 1981, Roberta was forced to say her goodbyes to her husband who died at the age of 70. In 2011, she also survived her twin sister, Rowena, who passed away at the age of 99.
In 2018, Roberta attended the memorial service for her senator son, John McCain, at the National Cathedral in Washington, U.S. A year later, she also outlived her daughter Sandy.
The 108-year-old’s cause of death was not revealed. May she rest in peace.
